Which is the most popular mobile in UAE

UAE’s Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) has recently revealed its statistics for the first quarter (Q1) of 2016 about the country’s most popular mobile phone sets, application websites and social networking platforms.

According to the report, iPhone trumps all other mobile companies whereas iPhone 6 remains to be the most used handset in the UAE regarding popularity.

It is interesting to note here that iPhone grabs three spots in the Top 6 list in UAE while iPhone’s arch-rival, Samsung barely makes it to the list.

Majority market share

During the period between January 1, 2016, and March 30, 2016, 68.91% of the handsets registered on UAE networks were smartphones. This also elaborates how smartphones have grabbed the majority market share of mobile sets in UAE.

When it comes to cell phone models, TRA data reveals that 4.48% of the total handsets purchased in Q1 2016 were iPhone 6, which includes both feature phones and smartphones.

The Top 6 are:

  • iPhone 6: 4.48%
  • Nokia 108: 2.92%
  • iPhone 5S: 2.39%
  • Nokia 105/1050: 2.32%
  • Samsung Galaxy J1/J100H: 1.81%
  • iPhone 6S: 1.69%

iPhone 5s was the second most popular smartphone while Samsung’s J100/J1 was the third most commonly used smartphone in UAE.

In feature phones, Nokia 108 was the most preferred handset. Overall it was the second most used phone in UAE.

According to the report, 33% of all handsets (including both features phones and smartphones) registered on UAE networks during Q1 2016 were manufactured by Samsung. Nokia handsets showed a presence of 28% whereas Apple was the third most popular handset manufacturer with a share of 14%. 

The report also provided information about the most popular mobile operating systems in the UAE. Android was the most commonly used operating system in Q1 2016 followed by the iOS operating system. On the other hand, Symbian saw a definite decline in its popularity this year.

Social Media

When it comes to social media, during the period between January 1, 2016 and March 30, 2016, fixed internet and smartphone users in UAE made 24 billion visits to social networking websites. Facebook got the most visits – amounting to 91% of the total visits. Twitter was the second most popular social site with 5% of the total visits in Q1 2016. LinkedIn, MySpace and Maktoob constituted the remaining visits.

App websites

As for the application websites, users of smartphone and fixed internet services in UAE visited various applications websites. Apple iTunes was the most commonly visited applications website, followed closely by Samsung Apps and Android applications.
