MS Dhoni: The Untold Story smashes all records


The biopic – MS Dhoni: The Untold Story has done phenomenally well at the box office since its release, becoming the most successful biopic in the Bollywood history.

Merely in nine days, it crossed the 100-crore mark and is performing spectacularly in both international and domestic markets.

Till October 12, the film has grossed over 192.30 crores at the global box office. Expectations are that it will cross the 200-mark by the end of its second week.

MS Dhoni’s journey

The movie is based on India’s iconic captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is one of the most famous and respected cricketers in India.

Dhoni is the current T20 and ODI captain of the Indian national cricket team. He made his debut in the cricket world in 2004 against Bangladesh and became the ODI captain in 2007.

In 2015, Forbes listed him as the 23rd athlete in the list of ‘Highest paid athletes in the world’ with an estimated earnings of $31 million.

CEO of Fox Star Studios, Vijay Singh, said, “MS Dhoni – The Untold Story is now the highest earning biopic ever made (in Indian cinema). This goes to show the love people have for Mahi and how they have been discovered, adopted and promoted the film”.

The film was released on September 30, 2016, in 61 countries across 4,500 screens worldwide.

Produced by Fox Star Studios and Arun Panday, the film shows the struggle and the journey of Dhoni from the lanes of Ranchi to becoming the captain of the Indian national cricket team.

It is currently the fifth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2016. Though originally released in Hindi language, the film has been dubbed in three Indian regional languages, Tamil, Marathi and Telugu.

It has grossed over 163.67 crores in India and earned 28.63 crores from overseas.  It is the second film after Salman Khan’s movie ‘Sultan’ to gross such a praiseworthy figure in short span of time.

It has a rating of 8.3 on IMDb and has received mixed reviews from the critics. The film’s lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput,  has received much appreciation and applause for putting up a splendid performance.
