What could probably be better than bagging your fifth Ballon d’Or award! Oh wait! Winning it and then becoming the first ever global ambassador for Expo 2020 Dubai. And of course, only the most influential player of the modern football could do that. Having over 80 million followers on social media, and recognition levels above 85 percent, as determined by the international survey respondents, he is one of the most influential players in modern football.
So, here we are witnessing another one of the football virtuoso’s arresting achievements this year, though the year has only started, Messi is already doing wonders. It has only been two years since the hosting duties for Dubai Expo 2020 were scored, and as the time of the event approaches, first global ambassador has already been announced. The world ‘s greatest footballer, who also bagged the Ballon d’Or this year, Lionel Messi was announced as a representative for Dubai’s World Expo, which is going to take place in about four years’ time.
Reem Al Hashimy, director general of Expo 2020 Dubai, said: “Lionel Messi’s performances on the football pitch bring people together, and as a result his influence reaches far beyond it”.
“He is the ideal person to be our first global ambassador.”
Well, just briefly highlighting how consequential and momentous this Expo 2020 is for Dubai, which you probably already know, because nobody could have missed those rampant billboards, lights and social media campaigns for Dubai’s bid to host the event. If the idea of this event proves to be as triumphant as it has been envisaged, then it could really assist in bettering the economy of Dubai. Also it could aide in the recovery from the financial crisis of 2008-2009, hence proliferating the number of jobs available.
The emirate’s main transport hub is going through colossal redevelopment and expansion in order to accommodate the inpouring of millions of international visitors due to the World Expo 2020.
By becoming the global ambassador the Argentine will help promote Expo 2020 Dubai on the international stage.
Firstly the Expo 2020 had teased with the message on the micro blogging: “Expo has scored its first official Expo Ambassad’or. Stay tuned for our official announcement tonight!”
Just an hour later, without creating anymore unnecessary suspense they announced the news on twitter: “Multi-award-winning footballer, Lionel Messi has today been announced as our first Global Ambassador.”
Last month Messi attended the 10th Dubai International Sports Conference along with other footballers, Frank Lampard, Gianluigi Buffon and Andrea Pirlo.
Reem Al Hashimy also said, “He overcame youthful health challenges to achieve his dreams of international excellence through hard work; making him an inspiration. He is perfectly placed to reach out to young people around the world, bringing them together to join us as we work towards hosting our World Expo in 2020.”
As the organizers have envisioned it, around 17.5 million people will be coming to Dubai from all over the world to Expo 2020, or up to 300,000 everybody from around more than 180 nations.
Taking a look at the Ballon d’Or award this year, the Argentine footballer terminated Real Madrid competitor Cristiano Ronaldo’s two year hold on the FIFA Ballon d’Or award. The Argentine had previously bagged four Ballon d’Ors in a row in years 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012.
He received 41.33% of the votes from the world’s national team coaches, captains and media representatives, while Ronaldo won 27.76% and Neymar 7.86%.
“It is a very special moment for me to be back here on this stage, winning again another Ballon d’Or after being there in the audience watching Cristiano win,” the 28-year-old said.
“It’s incredible this is my fifth. It’s much more than anything I’ve dreamed of as a kid. I want to thank everyone who voted for me and I want to thank my teammates. And lastly, I want to thank football in general for everything it has brought me. Both the bad and the good. Because it has made me learn and grow.”
This year is becoming a great year for the 28 year old Argentinian star. Messi was also the guest of honor at the sixth edition of the Globe Soccer Awards on the first night of the conference. However, the star did not address the conference or gala.
Messi has won many trophies with his Spanish team including the Champions League four times, the Spanish league seven times, and three Spanish Cups. At international level, he helped his country win the Olympic Games gold medal in 2008, and now these two remarkable achievements. We should all just be exultant that we are living in the era of the world’s greatest footballer.
The Global ambassadors for Expo 2020 will be recruited from the leading figures in the field of sports, arts, music, culture and media, alongside the international thought leaders of architecture and design, science and technology, economics, education, business, philanthropy and sustainability.
Ambassadors of Expo 2020 will be talking to the stakeholders to probe the connections between their work and that of Expo 2020 while travelling the world, along with the further collaboration and engagement in prospect.
