‘La La Land’, ‘Moonlight’ Wins Big at the Golden Globes

The 2017 award season has officially begun with the 74th Golden Globes. Musical comedy-drama film La La Land won a record breaking of seven statuses including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actor in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Ryan Gosling and Best Performance by an Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Emma Stone.

‘La La Land’ depicts the story of a musician and an aspiring actress meeting and falling in love in Los Angeles.

The second winner for the night was drama film ‘Moonlight’, a low-budget coming-of-age story about a sexually confused boy in the Miami ghetto, beat out heavy hitters such as ‘Manchester by the Sea’ and ‘Hacksaw Ridge’. The movie is based on the play ‘In the Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue’ by Tarell Alvin McCraney.

Casey Affleck took his award home for best actor in a drama for his role in ‘Manchester by the Sea’.  Isabelle Huppert, who nabbed the best actress in a drama award for ‘Elle,’ the story of a woman who exacts revenge on an assailant. A visibly shocked Huppert picked up the award over the heavily favoured Natalie Portman for ‘Jackie.’

Best of television

The Golden Globes also honoured the best of television with; Danny Glover winning Best Actor in a TV Comedy for his role in Atlanta’. Tracee Ellis Ross winning Best Actress in a TV Comedy for her role in ‘Black-ish’. ‘The Crown’ swept two statuses for Best Television Drama and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series Drama for Claire Foy.
