DIFF to showcase 156 films, including 73 MENA premieres this year

The 13th edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) is all set to kick off tomorrow in the UAE. The film festival will take place at Madinat Jumeirah from the 7th – 14th of December.

Every year, DIFF welcomes a number of global A-listers at the red carpet, presenting various cinematic movies across the Middle East region and beyond, introducing audiences to fresh new talent and original and distinctive filmmaking.

Highlights

The festival is all set to show 156 feature films including documentaries and shorts from 55 countries including 57 international premieres, 73 MENA premieres, 12 Middle East premieres and 9 GCC premieres. The films, crafted in more than 44 languages, populate DIFF’s Arab and Emirati competitions, and its out-of-competition segments dedicated to children, the Arab world, Virtual Reality and cinema from around the globe. With 18 Galas and 16 Special Presentations announced, Q&As and special appearances from a stellar lineup of industry talent and the spotlight firmly on Oscar hopefuls as well as promising Arab talent, the stage is set for another sparkling eight-day celebration of the very best in cinema.

DIFF Movie Mania

December 8 – Watch the world premiere of ‘Befikre’, a Hindi romantic comedy from Aditya Chopra, starring Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor. This will be followed by the latest work from two-time Oscar winner Ang Lee, who brings ‘Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk’ – based on the bestselling novel of the same name – to DIFF.

December 9 – Experience a triple bill of screenings starting with the Children’s Gala performance of family favourite ‘Swallows and Amazons’, followed by Emirati director Ali F. Mostafa’s much-anticipated third feature film ‘The Worthy’. British romantic comedy ‘Their Finest’, directed by Lone Scherfig and starring Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy and Sam Claflin, closes the day.

December 10 – Four gala screenings will place at the Madinat Arena in the morning with the 3D animated comedy family film ‘Rock Dog’, directed by Ash Brannon and featuring the voices of Luke Wilson and J.K Simons. The romantic musical comedy-drama ‘La La Land’, written and directed by Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and J. K. Simmons, will show at the Arena in the afternoon.

In the evening. Egyptian drama ‘The Preacher’ directed by Magdy Ahmed Aly and starring Amr Saad, Dorra Zarrouk and Ahmed Magdy, and close with John Lee Hancock’s ‘The Founder’, a biographical drama about the founder of McDonald’s, starring Michael Keaton.

December 11 – The day will kick start with The World Premiere of Lebanese comedy ‘Solitaire’, from director Sophie Boutros, starring Julia Kassar, Ali El Khalil and Bassam Koussa, and drama ‘A Monster Calls’ from director Juan Antonio Bayona and featuring Lewis MacDougall, Sigourney Weaver, Felicity Jones and Liam Neeson.

2013 Dubai International Film Festival - Day 1

December 12 – Enjoy back to back two screenings, starting with Argentina’s foreign language Oscar entry ‘The Distinguished Citizen’, directed by Gaston Duprat, and concluding with ‘Manchester By The Sea’, an acclaimed American drama directed and written by Kenneth Lonergan and starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams.

December 13 – Biographical sports drama The Bleeder’, starring Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber and Ron Pearlman by Philippe Falardeau. The star-studded ensemble American drama ‘Collateral Beauty’ from David Frankel follows, starring Will Smith, Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Naomie Harris and Keira Knightly.

Closing Gala Night

The highly anticipated standalone Star Wars films, ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, will be screened at the Closing Night Gala at the DIFF. The epic adventure from Lucasfilm is directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.

Movie fanatics can get hold of their red carpet gala glamour tickets for Dh100, with regular arena screening tickets at the Madinat Arena priced at Dh50.

DIFF films will also be screened at VOX Cinemas at the Mall of the Emirates and THE BEACH in JBR.
